An original framework shaped by a wholeistic understanding of lived experience — outlining the domains of care central to this healing practice.
Rooted in ongoing research through The Black MAP Project, the Afrodynamic Healing MAP presents a framework shaped by a wholeistic understanding of lived experience. It outlines the domains of care that are central to BWholeistic Healing's practice.
The MAP is a living, breathing framework — one that honors the complexity of Black life, the power of ancestral knowledge, and the interconnection of all aspects of self. It is not a checklist or a diagnosis, but an invitation to explore wholeness.
The framework encompasses seven interconnected domains, each offering distinct — yet deeply connected — pathways toward freedom, healing, and surthrivance.
A note on surthrivance: Building on Gerald Vizenor's (2008) articulation of survivance, surthrivance is used here as a blend of surviving, thriving, and resistance — speaking to Black existence as a form of survival against anti-Blackness and Black sourcing and resistance as tools for thriving.
Each domain represents a dimension of the self that holds potential for healing, growth, and liberation.
The spirit domain speaks to the wellness of the soul and includes spiritual and religious beliefs and practices.
The Black body has survived enduring brutality. This domain holds space for rest, pleasure, and the experience of freedom in the body — honoring calls for rest as resistance and pleasure as activism.
The mind domain encompasses that which we think about and where/how we learn. It encourages a re/turning to ancestral ways of knowing and engaging practices that awaken and sustain cultural memory.
This domain speaks to our emotional worlds and encompasses our relationship(s) with self and others. It connects to the potency of Black love and the importance of Black relational and communal encounter and connection.
Community encompasses those whom you consider your "tribe" — the folx you can call on or go to. From an Afrodynamic perspective, we are as well as our community. This domain underscores the enduring power of mutual aid and the healing energy of communal engagement.
Black people have long been able to source our needs through accessing internal and community means. Sourcing speaks to acknowledging and mindfully engaging our individual and collective well for surthrivance.
